Detroit 09': 2010 Toyota Camry Makes its Debut

Toyota has unveiled the revised the 2010 Toyota Camry in Detroit.

For 2010 the standard engine in the Camry is a new 2.5L engine. The Camry LE and XLE equipped with the 2.5L puts out 169 horsepower and in the SE it puts out 179. The 2.5L can be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

The exterior changes to the gas powered Camry include a new grille, front bumper, lager headlights and revised taillights. The Camry Hybrid gets a new unique hybrid grille, a distinct front bumper, a wider lower intake, restyled fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The revised (boring) 2010 Camry will be available this March.

Later this month, Chrysler will offer a preview of the three electric car prototypes it plans to produce over the course of the next decade. Currently working with battery suppliers both at home and abroad, Chrysler’s primary focus is developing an electric plug-in hybrid vehicle capable of averaging 300 miles per charge. “Fuel cells are in the future, ” said Chrysler co-president Jim Press, “but probably more in my kids’ future than my own.”

Riding high on the crest of the temporary success of the new Dodge Ram 1500, Press said Chrysler intends to continue producing fuel drinking titans like the Ram and Dakota regardless of the sales figures, and he doesn’t expect Chrysler to generate a positive cash flow for 2008. Press views the current hardships in the industry as merely temporary and with sights set firmly on the future, fully expects the market to right itself by 2010 - just in time for Chrysler’s anticipated release of 8 brand new models.

2010 Ford Fusion, Sport, Hybrid Revealed Live [2010 Ford Fusion]

We gave you all the details on the 2010 Ford Fusion, Fusion Sport, and 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at the break of day and now we've got the live reveal from the floor of the LA Auto Show. The trio of Fusionistas made their debut moments ago to bombastic loads of PR praise. If the improvements Ford is touting stand up to scrutiny, the Fusion stands to make some serious waves in the C/D sedan segment. We approve pretty solidly of the styling changes, the six speed manual and auto on the regular Fusion and the well thought out hybrid system on the twin powered model.

All this brings us to a point that has to be made. We can't assume the car performs up to snuff yet, but we'll cross that bridge when it comes. Assuming it does perform, cars like this are a loud middle finger to everyone who doubts Americans can build desirable, competitive, fun cars. If the American public doesn't respond to efforts like this, they deserve to drive the soulless appliances they seem to prefer these days.

Honda’s Hybrid Heat Recapture System: Improves Highway Efficiency But Not Enough Yet

Across the Pacific over in Japan Honda has been putting in extra effort on the hybrid initiative as they push to knock the Prius off its pedestal by 2010. Along with an improved hybrid image in their designs, Honda is also looking to provide their hybrids with something the Prius and no other hybrid on the market today has achieved: improved highway mileage. While the Prius and other hybrids are great around town and under 40 mph, their highway miles, when the car is running solely on its gasoline motor, are not as compelling. Honda is exploring the use of the Rankine System as a means of harnessing the heat that is typically lost via the cars exhaust and turning it into electricity, and thus electric motor horsepower.

The Rankine System is rather complex and would easier be explained by a Science Professor than a car junky, but here is the nutshell version. The heat produced by the internal combustion engine passes through a cylinder that recaptures that heat and uses it to create steam by passing it through water. The steam is then captured and rotates a turbine that generates electricity. The electricity is then harnessed to produce horsepower for the electric hybrid motors of the car (very nutshell version). Citroen HYmotion4: Hybrid Rallying

Citroen Motors makes rally racing relevant once again as they’ve completed testing of the first hybrid WRC rally car. Based on the hugely successful C4 platform, the cleaner version of the racer will get a 125 kW (~168 hp) electric motor to aid the default internal combustion engine. The electric motor will help the car in more ways than one. First, it adds an additional 30 Nm of torque to the rear axle. The driver can select which mode to use - electric, conventional, or a combination of both according to his power requirements. A kinetic energy recovery system also aids in stopping the car. The motor acts as a generator while braking, thus charging the 990-cell lithium-ion batteries and increasing the longevity of the brakes. During urban legs of the rally, the car can use an all-electric system, increasing the engine’s efficiency and lowering the noise created. Of course this car won’t be for sale but the data they’ll gather from the grueling conditions of a WRC rally race will no doubt be translated to everyday road cars.
