U.S. Government Denies GM's $10 Billion Request to Buy Chrysler

2011_chevy_volt_official_new.jpg
Earlier this week GM approached the U.S. government for $10 billion to support a merger between GM and Chrysler.

It's now being reported that the U.S. Treasury has denied the request due to the fact that the merger could result in the loss of thousands of U.S. jobs. Since the U.S. Treasury denied the request the merger talks have been put on hold.

November Auto Sales Prove Scared People Don't Buy Cars [Carpocalypse Now]

November car sales numbers are coming in and they’re what you expect them to be — horrendous. Ford is down 31% month-to-month with last year. Toyota fell even further at 33.9%. That's successful compared to GM's 41% drop. Even Honda is down 31.6%. What's going on?

Carpocalypse Now is going on, that's what! The entire auto industry is screwed at the moment, and it's not just the U.S. automakers. Since Toyota’s and Honda’s numbers are in the crapper it points to what we've been saying from the start. This is less an issue of a problem with our dear domestic car makers and more of a problem with a lack of desire on the part of consumers to buy from any company. People have either already lost their jobs, ot they're scared of losing their jobs — in addition to their houses and their way of life. When people are that scared, they just don't spend money. It's as simple as that.

It also doesn't help there's little in the way of accessible credit so even those who want to buy cars aren't able to buy. Don't mind us. We're just going to head over to hide in a cave somewhere building our hobo costume for Depression 2.0. [source: Ford, Toyota, GM, Honda]

GM to Pontiac: No Firebird for You. And We are Scaling Back on the Excitement Too

banditrendering.jpg picture by willfusion

With more Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealerships being unified under one roof a large number of dealers have joined the chorus in calling out for a new Firebird based off the new Camaro. Considering the three auto brands they really do not have any flashy lures of the sports car variety to bring in new blood, and nothing would chum the waters like a flashy new Firebird. But the hammer has fallen and the decision (for now. for good?) from GM is No.

The popular excuses for the failure of the Firebird to reach production are the new CAFE regulations and the cost to reach production. Reaching the new fuel mileage regulations appears to be a greater priority right now. Plus, one dealer exclaimed that the cost of getting the Firebird to production would have run around $200 million. Apparently that was all it took to keep the screaming chicken retired in its coup. 2008 Chevy HHR SS gets first reveal at Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan

2008 Chevrolet HHR SS

GM has chosen the Woodward Dream Cruise along the suburbs of Detroit on Woodward Ave as the appropriate location to show off the new 2008 HHR SS. With its retro-style leanings and SS badging they feel it is the appropriate place to attract the attention of the bow-tie lovers and pocket-rocket crowd. And maybe once they see that the new HHR SS is pumping out 260-hp out of a 2.0 liter engine they just might deem it worthy of a close inspection.

While a number of the retro-revisits in auto styling have been exciting to me at various times the HHR did not win me over. I appreciate the effort but without some real muscle behind it the car was mere fluff in my eyes. But now with 260-hp beneath its molded bonnet why I am reconsidering that evaluation? Amazing what a healthy dose of horsepower and badging can do.

Critics said that the most closely connected product for Maximum Bob at ...

Maximum BobRobert “Maximum Bob” Lutz, the celebrated product man, says goodbye to General Motors.

Maximum Bob has been with the car company since 2001, who first served as the vice chairman for the global marketing development, and he is greatly known – when he is not aboard on fighter planes – for designing and planning the Chevy Volt concept from scratch to its early stage of conceptualization.

Maximum Bob announced that he will step down from his position and Thomas Stephens will be the one who will take the position. Stepping down from the position on General Motors is not the end of Bob’s function as the product czar, for he will continue to give his opinion to the company with regards to product-related issues from April up to the end of this year. General Motors said that he will retire for good at the end of 2009.

Critics said that the most closely connected product for Maximum Bob at General Motors is the Volt. This is an extended line of electric cars that the company has been totally working out for two years. Is Maximum Bob’s departure a threat to the GM Green Car? The product czar declared that the project will be complete and it is certainly 100% safe on the track.

However, many critics said that Maximum Bob’s departure is a break point for General Motors. He is widely recognized as the most influential and greatest thing a car manufacturing company could have and his talent is not that easy to replace.
