Detroit 2009: Hyundai Genesis, Ford F-150 win North American Car and Truck of the Year

Like an automotive continuation of the BCS bowls, winners were crowned for the 16th North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year awards at the Detroit Auto Show this morning. Voted on by 50 automotive journalists in various media from the U.S. and Canada (where's Mexico?), winners took home a bit of brand polish and a big lump of crystal.

The award selects "the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar." For a shot at the title, eligible vehicles must be "all-new" or "substantially changed" from the previous model.

Taking the monogrammed plaque in the car category was the Hyundai Genesis, beating back two other finalists, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and the Ford Flex. It's the first time a diesel has been a finalist, and it was only beat by a car that is gathering plaudits everywhere and for everything.

The truck field was narrowed down to the Ford F-150, Dodge Ram, and Mercedes ML320 BlueTEC. With the highest available towing capacity, the highest payload capacity, and class-tying fuel economy -- not to mention being the best selling vehicle for more than three decades -- it's no wonder who won.

2010 Ford Taurus [Rendered For Your Pleasure]

The 2010 Ford Taurus has been spotted around town wearing next-to-no camo. We've pulled the sheet entirely off with these exclusive renderings from KORSdesign of the new Taurus to be unveiled officially in Detroit.

Ford has taken the smart approach by loosening the hold on the Gillette razor design team, giving us Yanks some of the Euro flavor we’ve been asking for. The 2010 Ford Taurus, set to make its official debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show, is finally on track to become a competitive sedan all over again. Using the recently released Lincoln MKS as its base (which itself is based off the current model Ford Taurus / Ford Five Hundred), the new 2010 Taurus appears to be more sophisticated in every way.

The front fascia will receive the most attention from critics as the three-bar razor bladed grille is now gone, replaced by an attractive Euro-inspired electric razor with more detail and depth. The lower fascia gains some of the Euro-flair as well with twin fog lamps situated to either side of a new trapezoidal center intake that appears to be divided in thirds. The headlights are horizontal units that rise ever-so-slightly on their outward edge to visually connect with the sculpted body side character line. The A-pillar runs downward and toward the center as it creates the power dome (a design quickly becoming a centerpiece of every non-Mustang in the Ford car lineup) at the leading edge of the hood, bearing resemblance to the 2010 Fusion and seemingly drawing from the Ford Interceptor Concept.

The profile of the 2010 Taurus is less formal than the previous model and has gained some attractive surfacing. The shoulder line is strong and arcs slightly as it runs from the headlights rearward to meet just before the tail lamps. The wheel arches are more pronounced and have a more muscular feel to them, giving the 2010 Taurus a very strong stance. Although we question the need for the artificial side vents and would have hoped it was a trend that would have gone away by now.

The rear design hints at the Ford Interceptor Concept in its tail lamp treatment and in the upper deck-lid surfacing. The Ford emblem is now set in a chrome trim piece sitting at the center of the trunk surface that runs horizontally to intersect with the tail lamps. The lamps themselves are a take on the Interceptor but lose the depth from the concept as they are now fairly flush to surface. The 2010 Taurus is a large vehicle and Ford has done its best to lose some of the visual mass by utilizing many horizontal elements and pushing the details outward. The lower body line is a dark grey plastic that also helps to lessen the visual mass, a technique also used on the 2010 Mustang.

The 2010 Ford Taurus looks to be on track to fix some of what was wrong with the very bland previous generation and we hope Ford delivers. We’ll bring you more info as it becomes available, until then take a peek at the illustrations we commissioned from KORSdesign.

Citroen wins in New Zealand

1-2 win for Citroen

Oh how harshly we misjudge cars.  If anyone is under the impression that smaller, economical cars don’t have guts or aren’t “lustable” (whatever that means), you need to check out the attached pictures of last Sunday’s Rally race in New Zealand.  Fans of WRC and the cars that they inspire certainly had to be pleased with the race which lived up to WRC’s reputation for providing some of the most exciting motorsport racing on the planet.

Suzuki SX4-WRC
Suzuki SX4-WRC

World Champion Sebastien Loeb won for the third time in as many races to win Rally New Zealand by 17.5 seconds last Sunday at the expense of Mikko Hirvonen who lost controland spun out on the second-to-last stage.  The win increased his lead over Hirvonen the in the World Rally Championship.  The win was Loeb’s 42nd in WRC rallies, aftervictories in Finland and Germany and his second in New Zealand, where he last one in 2005.  Loeb’s one-two finish with teammate Dani Sordo of Spain also increased Citroen’s grip on the manufacturers’ championship.

Mitsubishi Taking Flight

Taking a look at both the manufacturer and driver results (listed below), it’s a shame not to see a single American in the list.  Sure, this is the land of NASCAR and INDY (at least once a year), but you would still think Rally Racing would be a bigger hit in the States.  Even as heavily modified as the cars are, they are certainly more closely related to actual production cars than anything from the previously mentioned racing leagues.  And what could be more American than tearing ass around off-road?  I mean the Dukes of Hazzard was basically a Rally Race with a couple of Good ‘Ole Boys in a Dodge!  I can almost picture some kid from Alabama named Skeeter hoisting a trophy, surrounded by the Beck’s bikini team.

RESULTS FROM THE WRC RALLY OF NEW ZEALAND:

Final results and standings Sunday after the 18-stage Rally of New Zealand, 11th event in the World Championship: (After 18 special stages)

1. Sebastien Loeb, France, Citroen, 3 hours, 59 minutes, 18.9 seconds.

2. Dani Sordo, Spain, Citroen, 17.5 seconds behind.

9. Henning Solberg, Norway, Ford, 9:15.2.

10. Martin Prokop, Czech Republic, Mitsubishi, 13:49.0.

Overall drivers’ championship standings after 11 of 15 rallies:

November Auto Sales Prove Scared People Don't Buy Cars [Carpocalypse Now]

November car sales numbers are coming in and they’re what you expect them to be — horrendous. Ford is down 31% month-to-month with last year. Toyota fell even further at 33.9%. That's successful compared to GM's 41% drop. Even Honda is down 31.6%. What's going on?

Carpocalypse Now is going on, that's what! The entire auto industry is screwed at the moment, and it's not just the U.S. automakers. Since Toyota’s and Honda’s numbers are in the crapper it points to what we've been saying from the start. This is less an issue of a problem with our dear domestic car makers and more of a problem with a lack of desire on the part of consumers to buy from any company. People have either already lost their jobs, ot they're scared of losing their jobs — in addition to their houses and their way of life. When people are that scared, they just don't spend money. It's as simple as that.

It also doesn't help there's little in the way of accessible credit so even those who want to buy cars aren't able to buy. Don't mind us. We're just going to head over to hide in a cave somewhere building our hobo costume for Depression 2.0. [source: Ford, Toyota, GM, Honda]

2010 Ford Fusion, Sport, Hybrid Revealed Live [2010 Ford Fusion]

We gave you all the details on the 2010 Ford Fusion, Fusion Sport, and 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid at the break of day and now we've got the live reveal from the floor of the LA Auto Show. The trio of Fusionistas made their debut moments ago to bombastic loads of PR praise. If the improvements Ford is touting stand up to scrutiny, the Fusion stands to make some serious waves in the C/D sedan segment. We approve pretty solidly of the styling changes, the six speed manual and auto on the regular Fusion and the well thought out hybrid system on the twin powered model.

All this brings us to a point that has to be made. We can't assume the car performs up to snuff yet, but we'll cross that bridge when it comes. Assuming it does perform, cars like this are a loud middle finger to everyone who doubts Americans can build desirable, competitive, fun cars. If the American public doesn't respond to efforts like this, they deserve to drive the soulless appliances they seem to prefer these days.

Super Bowl Car Commercials

Tundraad

Like everyone else, we spent most of our night yesterday watching Super Bowl XLI, and like most people we watched the commercials with almost as much interest as the game. Usually, automakers spend just as much time and money on the Super Bowl as do beer and soda manufacturers. That didn’t seem to be the case this year.

Toyota and GM seemed to spend the most getting their new commercials out there. Toyota’s new Tundra got two new commercials showing off the vehicle’s capabilities. One had the truck speeding through a closing steel door — kind of like in “Independence Day,” except without aliens and spaceships — then coming to a full stop before the road ran off a cliff. Neat. Totally fake, but neat.

The other Tundra commercial showed the truck towing 10,000 pounds on a trailer up an inclined seesaw of scaffolding, which then flipped downward so the Tundra could once again show off its brakes. Neat, but would the trailer brake that easily?

Speaking of questionable tactics: Honda keeps referring to itself as the most fuel-efficient car company, as it did in its kind of boring ad last night. However, that stat refers to the 2005 model year lineup, which includes the now-discontinued Insight hybrid and lacks the new Ridgeline pickup truck. We’re not sure if the 2007 MY lineup is the most fuel-efficient, but our guess is no based on them still using the 2005 figure.

Gmrobot

GM’s singing celebrities and normal-owners commercial wasn’t any better. It didn’t endear us to the brand as it was intended to, and was completely forgettable. And don’t get us started on the men-stripping commercial, which was a contest winner’s idea. It made no sense.

GM’s most interesting commercial showed an assembly line robot committing suicide in a dream sequence. It too made little sense and didn’t bring home the quality attribute it was aiming for, plus it was over the top.

Fordad

Perhaps the least bad best car commercial was Ford’s, showing off its new Super Duty trucks with a manly guy explaining just how great they are. There wasn’t anything fancy involved besides a big, big truck.

What was your favorite car commercial from last night?

Suburban Dad: Ford Expedition

Suburbandadexpedition

I’ll say this for the Expedition: It wasincredibly comfortable to ride in, but the mechanics of stopping andgoing overwhelmed the plushness of the interior.

I know great big SUVs like the Expedition are going to need hugeamounts of power to get them moving — and that when they’re this big,it’s going to take more effort to slow them down. But both accelerationand braking were lagging at best — a slow, painful chore at worst. Thataside, my wife and kids really enjoyed the interior of the Expedition. There was far more space for passengers than there was in the Chrysler Aspen, although getting back to the third road was harder than in the Aspen.

TheExpedition’s automatic driver’s seat, which moves back after you’vestopped, made it easier for me to get in and out of the car. When youclimb back in and start it up, the seat moves back into position. Myknees were very grateful for this feature.

Expeditionnav

This Expedition had tons of other features, including an easy-to-usenavigation system (easier by far than the joystick-burdened system inthe Nissan Quest we drove), heated and cooled front seats (for bothbacks and butts), wireless headphones and a backseat entertainmentsystem with a DVD player. All those extras don't come cheap: As driven, this SUV was around $48,000.

The Wife: She found it very comfy and deemed the heated leatherseats “a nice touch.” The best part for her? “The kids have plenty ofroom to sit — and not touch each other.” Still, she found theExpedition’s dimensions just too darn big, noting, “It looks like asemi.”

The Teen Son: He was thrilled with the headphones once I turned offthe all-Christmas-music station. “I like the headphones,” he said,“because they let me hear my music without having to listen to everyoneelse.” Spoken like a true teen.

The Tweener Daughter: She didn’t like how hard it was to get into the backseat, but “I like how my brother is stuck back there.”

The 10-Year-Old: He liked the DVD controls in the back because “thenyou don’t have to bug your parents to control the movie.” While wearingthe wireless headphones, he was in his own world, humming along to themusic.

Would my wife or I buy the Expedition? Probably not. The roominessinside — not to mention the plushness — was terrific, but the overlylarge size, big price tag, and concern about the effort it would takemy wife to get it to stop in traffic would keep it off our list.

Nelly's On And Poppin' Custom Ford Flex To Be Revealed At SEMA [Sema]

Working with Ford and Funkmaster Flex (no relation), Grammy-winner Nelly laid out a design for his own custom Ford Flex crossover; the finished result will be revealed to the artist today at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Apparently Nelly was enthusiastic about the Flex from his first look, saying "Yo, that’s hot! How can I get one of those?" Never one to miss a PR opportunity, Ford offered to customize a Flex for the "premiere stuntastic stuntman" under the watchful eye of Funkmaster, himself a custom Flex owner. All we have so far is one photo and a press release below the jump, but Nelly's Flex will come to you as soon as we get our eyes on it, so try to contain yourselves.

“NELLY” FLEX UNVEILED AT SEMA SHOW

Nelly's Customized 2009 Ford Flex to be Unveiled at SEMA Show

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Nov. 4, 2008 – Grammy Award-winning artist Nelly will see his brand new customized 2009 Ford Flex for the first time today when the vehicle is unveiled on the Ford stand at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas.

The 34-year-old rapper, singer and actor says Ford’s newest crossover caught his eye for the first time in July when it was on display at a Ford-sponsored event in Atlanta.

“When I saw it, I said ‘Yo, that’s hot! How can I get one of those?’” he recalled. “I thought it was a real unique vehicle.”

Later that night, Nelly shared his excitement about the car with his good friend, hip hop DJ Funkmaster Flex, who has a customized Flex of his own. That’s when the metaphorical wheels started turning.

"I've been partnering with Ford on some amazing vehicles since 2005," said Funkmaster Flex. When Nelly reached out on wanting a custom Flex of his own, I knew it was going to be 'on and poppin.' From our initial meeting with him at my warehouse in the Bronx to follow-up conversations that we had about this vehicle, there was no doubt that we could deliver something that would ultimately be true to Nelly and his own style".

"When it comes to a vehicle looking sweet, this crossover is beyond sweet," said Flex of the crossover. "This vehicle is one where you can be hot coming off the dealership lot—which is a plus, but when you know that you can customize it afterwards and turn a car that's a 10 into a 20—that's super hot." It was even more exciting for me to be able to work with Nelly and introduce him to the Ford team of designers to create a vehicle all his own. It was definitely an experience."

Usha Raghavachari, Ford's Crossover Marketing Communications Manager, attended the initial event in Atlanta and says she was delighted to see how enthusiastic Nelly was about the Flex.

“He is a huge hip hop star who transcends the traditional audience. The fact that he is attracted to Flex is testament to its head-turning design,” she said.

Nelly says he was thrilled about the idea of “building” his own Flex.

“I’m what they call a ‘premiere stuntastic stuntman,’ and so you know when it comes to cars, I’m pretty inclined to go overboard,” he said. “I wanted to really turn the vehicle into mine. You can do so much with it, and I think that’s the best thing about it.”

After meeting with Nelly and getting a feel for his taste, Ford Designer Melvin Betancourt began sketching.

“Just from talking with Nelly, we knew that he wanted a custom-color blue car with a white roof, a great sound system, 22-inch wheels, an exhaust system with a little bit of a rumble on it, and a personalized interior,” said Betancourt, who worked with Catalyst Industrial Marking, Inc. to build the vehicle. “He wanted our input on the other elements of the customization.”

One of the first ideas they had, says Betancourt, was to design a custom appliqué for the roof.

“We created an art form that we feel reflects Nelly’s personality,” he said. “It’s a bird, which is a symbol of freedom — the ability to do whatever you want in life — and it has a very modern feel to it, which is very Flex.”

The wheels had to stand out. So the team chose NC Forged “6 Spoke” 3-piece aluminum, 22-inch wheels with NC floating center caps.

“Wheels are usually either all-chrome or all-painted. We did custom chrome rims with a brushed aluminum center, which is very unusual,” he said. “We also wanted a wild, crazy offset on the wheels, so we went with a 4½-inch rim in the back and a 3-inch rim in the front, which creates a staggered look.”

Betancourt says the inspiration for the interior of the vehicle came largely from the exterior.

“The outside of the car reflects his personality, so it was a matter of bringing the some of the same elements inside,” he said.

The team selected a black Tuscany leather interior with Katzkin® seats and contrast blue stitching that picks up the unique exterior color of the car. They also replaced all the wood grain trim inside the car with the same artwork appliqué featured on the roof.

In addition, Nelly’s Flex features the industry-exclusive Ford SYNC™ technology and a CIM LIIV™ wireless Internet entertainment system, which enables passengers to enjoy web surfing, online games, e-mail, downloaded movies, music and live television.

Nelly says one of the things that really attracts him to the Ford Flex is the vehicle’s potential to transcend the generation gap.

“It used to be that parents and kids didn’t like the same thing. Families are getting a lot younger, and now it’s kind of a friendship between parents and kids,” he explained. “When you can have a vehicle that both can rock their own way, I think you have something there that’s very special.”

Raghavachari agrees.

“Flex has successfully attracted a wide variety of people to Ford, with over half our customers being completely new to the Ford brand,” she said. “This car helps our customers make a real statement about themselves and allows us to make a statement about where Ford is headed in terms of design and innovation."

I first met Vaughn Gittin Jr. in a non-descript Maryland strip mall parking ...

I first met Vaughn Gittin Jr. in a non-descript Maryland strip mall parking lot on a Wednesday night in September of 2001. He was hanging out at the kickoff party for the old Super Street Tour. He was introduced to me as a “drifter” but I was nonplussed. Keep in mind, at this point I had already been to Japan and witnessed Taniguchi manji the OG HKS S15 at Bihoku Highland. I was already a JDM drift fan boy with no time for a wannabe. Fast forward to last Saturday night and I see JR at a party. He is no longer the fresh-faced kid I remember. Now he walks with a swagger that can only come after running the high bank of Irwindale harder than the world’s best drifters. In this picture he’s riding the wall on the 100 mph first turn at the Red Bull event in his 2008 car, “Betsy”. On this day he would later tag the wall too hard retiring the car. But that’s his style – go big or… you know the rest. This year, poppa JR’s gotta a brand new bag. Hit the jump to see the video. As an added bonus check out the verbal smackdown he lays on Samuel Hubinette at the 1:57 mark.

JR Gittin Falken Mustang at 2008 Red Bull Drift Championships

The best thing about JR is that he’s not a classically trained product of any motorsports academy or a transplant from another form of racing looking to ride the drift wave onto better ride. He’s a pure drifter and his full-throttle driving style suits his 2010 Mustang perfectly. What I like best about JR is no matter how big his skills have taken him he still maintains that same enthusiasm he had in a parking lot in Maryland some eight years back.
